About British Shorthair Cats

  • Care

British Shorthair cats are not very high maintenance cats, but it’s still important to provide them with the resources and care they need to ensure they live a long and happy life!

British Shorthair cats have dense and thick fur coats. This means they are NOT hypoallergenic and you should not get a British Shorthair if you or members of your house are allergic to cats. But don’t worry as maintaining their beautiful fur is not a hard challenge!

British shorthair cats should be brushed every other week or as needed to keep their coats as shiny and beautiful as they can be and to reduce shedding levels.

All cats, including British Shorthairs, go through annual shedding in the spring and fall. During this time, you may have to brush your cat’s fur more frequently, but this can vary cat-to-cat and depending on where you live.

Your cat should be offered good quality food with lots of protein to ensure they are healthy, happy and cared for. The amount of food you feed to your cat should be prescribed by your vet for your cat’s size, weight and activity level to make sure they are not being underfed or overfed.

Cats use litter boxes, which makes it quite easy to clean up after them. Cats are naturally very clean animals, and they actually prefer to use a litter box over anythng else!

Having your cat spayed and/or neutered is not only important for their health, but it also makes their litter box habits even better and the litter-box-training process much easier. All of our kittens and cats are litter-box trained before they go to their forever homes.

Un-fixed cats will often mark and/or spray urine to “claim” their territory as their own. If you have more then one cat in your home, the rule of thumb is one litter box per cat with one extra litter box to spare. This means if you have 2 cats you should have 3 litter boxes.

It’s important that your cat sees the vet for check ups once a year or as recommended by your vet to insure he or she is in good health and is being cared for in the way she/he deservers. If you are buying a cat especially if you have never had one it is very important to do your research before you proceed with adopting a kitten.
